FRESH STARTS:

Before & After Inspiration, Green Design, and More

TRADING PLACES—On April 25th, DDNYC’s own Chip Brian and Mike Daddio  joined members of the Fiver Children’s Foundation at the New York Stock Exchange, where they cheered on young friends from the Fiver Children’s Foundation as they rang the ceremonial opening bell! Last week, roles were reversed, as the Fiver Children’s Foundation’s 2013 Fiver Benefit honored DDNYC's Chip Brian for his ongoing commitment to providing opportunities for the city’s underserved youth.

THE GREEN TEAM—When a Queens, New York, couple lost their beloved home of 28 years to Superstorm Sandy six months ago, DDNYC helped rebuild it from the ground up, incorporating state-of-the-art green building techniques designed to help make the home more resilient in future storms. Understanding that a property located on a salt marsh remains in a vulnerable position, we installed water and vapor barriers underneath the floor system in the crawl space, incorporated flood vents in the foundation walls, and applied antimicrobial treatments in the crawl space and throughout the home’s water-damaged first floor. This month, it’s time for owner Fred Toborg (who was, for 30 years, a well-respected sports coach at Trinity School, on the Upper West Side) and his wife Barbara Toborg (who has recently launched a campaign to locate and preserve remaining artifacts attesting to the history of their little village of Broad Channel, Queens) to move back home!  We wish the Toborgs many more safe, happy, and healthy years in their home.

BEFORE & AFTER: AN AMAZING MAKEOVER—Picturing how a project will look when it’s complete can be a challenge in the early stages. That’s why we’ve launched a new series of Before & After images on Houzz. This month, we take you through the inspiring transformation of a Tribeca duplex into a beautiful, well-functioning dream loft-style apartment for a young family. You can see the final result of this recently completed project, which we worked on with Damon Liss Design, and others on our web site’s Renovation pages.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH P&T INTERIORS—Recently, we had the pleasure of visiting with one of New York’s most creative interior designers, Pol Theis, of P&T Interiors, who shared some of his motivations, inspirations, and insights into creating a harmonious designer-client relationship with us in this exclusive interview. “Design can be compared to an orchestra where each of the instruments is playing its own role,” says Theis.
